West Sumatra is a province on the island of Sumatra with its capital in Padang. It is known as the homeland of the Minangkabau people, who follow a matrilineal kinship system and uphold the philosophy of “Adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi Kitabullah” — customs grounded in Islamic principles.
